Two Haslett High School Students Named to Michigan's State Student Advisory Council
Nanaty Assefa and Aikem Gill will carry student voice to the Michigan Department of Education during the 2026-27 school year
Two Haslett High School students have been selected to serve on the Michigan Department of Education Student Advisory Council (MDE-SAC) for the 2026-27 school year, joining a statewide group of students who bring student perspective directly to the Department of Education and the State Superintendent.
Nanaty Assefa, a rising 10th grader, and Aikem Gill, a rising 11th grader, were notified of their acceptance this week. Both students also serve on Haslett's Superintendent Student Advisory Board, where they regularly share student perspective with district leadership.
The MDE Student Advisory Council is a statewide body that gives students a voice in education policy. During the 2026-27 school year, council members will meet monthly with State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko and other department leaders to provide feedback on new and ongoing state education initiatives. Members also take part in workgroups and gather for one to two in-person meetings during the year.
The students have been invited to a kickoff meeting of the council in Lansing, where they will connect with current council members and students from across Michigan.

About the MDE Student Advisory Council
The Michigan Department of Education Student Advisory Council is a statewide body convened by the Department to bring student voice directly to the Department and the State Superintendent. Members meet monthly during the school year, participate in council workgroups, and gather in person one to two times per year. More information is available by contacting MDE-SAC@michigan.gov.
