Weather-Related School Closings
Haslett Public Schools may occasionally need to close due to weather conditions. When a decision is made, our school community is notified as soon as possible through social media and our other communication channels.
How You'll Be Notified
Once the decision to close school is made, usually the morning of the closure, all school families immediately receive phone and email notifications based on the contact information in our Skyward student information system.
Tip: Parents and guardians can add additional phone numbers and email addresses by logging into their Skyward "Family Access" account.
If You Don't Have a Family Access Account
You can still stay informed through these channels:
- District website. Closure information is posted as soon as a decision to close school is finalized.
- District app. Notifications are pushed to all app subscribers.
- Local media. Area media stations are contacted as soon as the district makes a decision to close.
If you drive your child to school: When the school appears not to be open, please check the resources above before leaving your child at the door.
How the Decision Is Made
The Superintendent of Schools is responsible for the final decision to close school. That decision is not made alone. It is made in consultation with other area superintendents, the Ingham Intermediate School District, the Ingham County Road Commission, and area safety personnel such as Meridian Township and the Michigan State Police.
Our Closing Procedures
When weather conditions lead the district to consider closing school, the following procedures are used.
When outside temperatures or wind chills are consistently at or below −20°F, the district closes school due to the increased risk to student safety.
- Road conditions. When closing for road conditions is a consideration, the Superintendent and Director of Transportation begin traveling the roads early in the morning to determine whether conditions are unsafe for our buses, parents, and students.
- Regional coordination. The Superintendent and Director of Transportation stay in communication with neighboring district leaders throughout the morning whenever weather is a concern.
- Independent decisions. Every district decides independently. Neighboring districts may close while we remain open, since road conditions vary with the rural or urban nature of each district.
- Timing. Final decisions to close school are made in the morning before 6:00 a.m. when possible.
We take the decision to close school very seriously. As a parent, you may not always agree with our decision. Please know that if you believe conditions are not safe, it is always your right to keep your child home.
