Office of the Superintendent

Superintendent's Student Advisory Board

Understanding what school is actually like for students sits at the center of the Superintendent's work, and the students living it see it most clearly. The Superintendent's Student Advisory Board gives them a direct way to share that perspective and to help shape the decisions that affect their day.

How

How It Works

The structure is simple. The board starts the year for a half day together, then meets monthly to keep the work moving.

Each August

Launch Workshop

The year opens with a summer workshop. Members review what they accomplished the year before, study new survey data, welcome new members, and decide what to take on next.

Monthly

Working Meetings

From there the board meets monthly. Members reconnect, learn how the district runs, work through what is and is not working for students, and move their projects forward.

The board is made possible by High School Associate Principal Stephanie Livingston, who coordinates the agendas, works directly with the students, and keeps the group running throughout the year.

Ground Rules

The board holds to a few ground rules: stay curious instead of judgmental, make room for every voice, keep what is shared in the room private, and follow through on the work. Several times a year, a member represents the group at a Board of Education meeting so the Board hears from students directly.

How Students Join

Students apply each spring. Any student heading into grades 9 through 12, including 8th graders moving up to the high school, may apply. Once on the board, students can remain through graduation.

  • Apply. Students complete a short application, shared through a Google Form and promoted during Viking Time and in English classes.
  • Review. Associate Principal Livingston, Superintendent Malley, and current members review applications with names removed to build a well-rounded and representative board.
  • Join. Selected students receive a welcome letter and begin at the August workshop.
  • Commit. Members attend monthly, represent their peers, and hold to the group's ground rules.
What

What They Worked On

Most of the board's work this past year comes down to making it easier for students to get involved, connect with teachers, and speak up. Highlights from 2025-26:

  • Built one clear clubs list. Members worked with administrators to assemble an up-to-date list of clubs with meeting times, locations, and advisor contacts, and worked to publish it on a single page of the website.
  • Made athletics easier to navigate. Working with the athletic department, members documented the time commitment, season length, tryout dates, and a student perspective for each sport.
  • Spoke to staff directly. Members sat on a student panel during the April staff development day and told teachers what helps students feel comfortable coming to them.
  • Reported to the Board. Members updated the Board of Education through the year and answered questions.

What's Next in 2026-27

The board sets its full agenda at the August workshop. A few priorities are already in view.

Launch the clubs and sports lists

Get both lists fully live so every student has one place to find a way to get involved.

Welcome the Class of 2030

Help plan an 8th grade orientation that makes the jump to high school less intimidating.

Increase student advocacy

Create opportunities for students, teachers, and administrators to connect on issues.

Get Involved

Students who want to join can apply each spring. Anyone with an idea the board should consider is welcome to share it with a member or the Superintendent's office.
