Schools of Choice Program

Information and Guidelines for Non-Resident Enrollment

Eligibility & Residency

Students residing in districts within Ingham, Clinton, Eaton, Jackson, Livingston, Shiawassee, and Washtenaw Intermediate School Districts are eligible to apply. While most students are eligible, state law allows districts to deny enrollment to students suspended within the past two years or expelled from any school. Students must be able to attend regularly and arrive on time.

Transportation & Attendance

Haslett Public Schools does not provide transportation for Schools of Choice students. Families are responsible for all transportation and must ensure their children arrive on time for the start of school and are picked up promptly at dismissal. Continuous, regular attendance is required in accordance with district policies.

Special Education Services

Within Ingham ISD: Students receive the same application process and selection criteria as general education students. If accepted, Haslett will implement an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) to ensure appropriate support.

Outside Ingham ISD (Section 105c): Enrollment requires a written agreement between Haslett and the resident district regarding the responsibility for special education costs. This must be finalized before enrollment is approved.

Application & Selection

Applications are only available during published windows and can be accessed on the district website or at the administrative office. If applications exceed available spots, a random lottery is conducted for each grade level in June. Siblings of current Schools of Choice students receive priority.

Elementary Building Placement

Haslett operates three elementary schools: Wilkshire (K-1), Murphy (2-5), and Ralya (2-5). While parents may indicate a preference between Ralya and Murphy, assignments are based primarily on available space. Every effort is made to keep siblings together, but building preferences cannot be guaranteed.

Enrollment Duration & Fees

Once accepted, students may attend Haslett through graduation without reapplying annually, provided they maintain continuous enrollment. Enrollment is free; however, standard school fees (such as field trips or extracurricular activities) apply to all students equally.
