Safety Drills
Practice makes prepared. Safety drills are an essential part of keeping our school community ready for any situation. Through regular, well-planned practice, our students and staff develop the confidence and muscle memory needed to respond effectively during emergencies.
Why We Practice
Safety drills serve multiple important purposes in our schools:
- Building Familiarity: Regular practice helps students and staff respond calmly and efficiently
- Testing Our Systems: Drills allow us to evaluate and improve our emergency procedures
- Meeting Safety Standards: We follow state-mandated requirements to ensure comprehensive preparedness
- Creating Confidence: When everyone knows what to do, anxiety decreases and safety increases
Our Drill Schedule
Each Haslett Public Schools building conducts three types of safety drills throughout the school year:
Fire Drills - 5 drills annually
- Three drills completed by December 1st
- Two additional drills after December 1st
- Focus on quick, orderly evacuation procedures
Tornado Drills - 2 drills annually
- One drill conducted in March
- One additional drill between August and June
- Practice protective positioning and shelter procedures
Lockdown Drills - 3 drills annually
- One drill by December 1st
- One drill after January 1st
- One additional drill between August and June
- One of the three drills conducted during lunch, recess, or other non-classroom time
- Focus on secure-in-place procedures and safety protocols
Transparency and Compliance
Haslett Public Schools maintains full transparency about our safety drill practices:
- Planning and Coordination: We provide our annual safety drill schedule to the local emergency management coordinator by September 15th each year, ensuring coordination with community emergency response efforts.
- Documentation and Reporting: Within 30 school days of each completed drill, we post documentation on our website so families can stay informed about our preparedness activities.
- Flexibility for Safety: If weather or other conditions beyond our control require rescheduling a drill, we reschedule within 10 days and notify the appropriate emergency management coordinator.
School-Specific Information
Each of our school buildings follows the same comprehensive drill schedule while adapting procedures to fit their specific layout and needs. Our principals work closely with local first responders and emergency management to ensure our procedures reflect best practices for each location.

Working Together for Safety
Our safety drills are designed to be calm, educational experiences that build confidence rather than create anxiety. Teachers prepare students for what to expect, and we focus on the importance of following directions and staying together as a school community.
