Critical Incident Stress Management

Supporting Our School Community Through Difficult Moments

When a traumatic event affects our school community, such as the loss of a student or staff member, a serious accident, or another deeply stressful situation, Haslett Public Schools follows a Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) protocol to provide timely, coordinated support. We have used this approach since 2017.

What is CISM?

CISM is a research-based process used by schools and organizations to help people through highly stressful or traumatic events. It is not therapy. It is a series of supportive steps designed to lower tension, help individuals process their reactions, and restore a sense of normalcy. The goal is to facilitate normal recovery in people experiencing normal reactions to abnormal events.

Our Approach

Every critical incident is different, and our response is tailored to the specific needs of each situation. Depending on the circumstances, our response may include:

  • Coordinating with affected families on communication and privacy preferences
  • Holding an emergency staff meeting before students arrive
  • Reading a prepared statement to students in classrooms
  • Making mental health and counseling staff available for students and staff
  • Offering group or individual support sessions
  • Sharing resources on self-care and recognizing signs of stress
  • Following up with students and staff in the days and weeks that follow

Communication

We are committed to providing accurate, timely, and consistent information to families during difficult situations. All districtwide communication is coordinated through the Administration Office, and we use our established communications systems to keep families informed. We also work closely with affected families to respect their preferences around privacy and messaging.

How Families Can Help

After a difficult event, children may have questions or show signs of stress at home. Families can help by:

  • Keeping routines as normal as possible
  • Being available to listen without forcing conversation
  • Reassuring children that it is okay to feel sad, confused, or upset
  • Reaching out to school counselors if you notice changes in behavior or mood
